Hackers Never Stop Evolving To Overcome New Anti-Hack Devices
Are we hearing more about companies getting hacked because the hackers are getting better at it or are companies just getting better at detecting successful hacks? We may never know, but as anti-fraud technology improves hacker attacks are expected to increase as well. Hacking is increasing because it's very profitable. Other types of attacks use commercially available malware to encrypt your files and then demand payment or your files will be lost forever. This recently happened to someone I know to a new computer they'd gotten less than two weeks earlier. Once they figure out how to monetize health information (blackmail, filing false claims, etc.) expect to hear about big breaches there as well, especially with the new personalized health monitoring devices and increasing use of electronic medical records.

You've seen the little gold sticker on credit cards. It's part of fraud-prevention technology called Chip and Pin or EMV, the standard in Europe. Counterfeiters can no longer just copy the magnetic strip. In the US on October 15th liability for counterfeit fraud shifts to the party (usually a bank) that processes the transaction which is incentive for them to drive their merchant vendors to switch over to this technology or a comparable one called Chip and Signature. Another method allows you to use your smartphone as a credit card by waving it over a reader.

Big companies can mean big paydays but smaller companies can make for easier targets as they lack the sophisticated anti-hacking technology. In 2012, seventy-two percent of security breach or data loss incidents were in companies with 100 or fewer employees. Master Pac products through Travelers Select offer optional coverage* for data breach for smaller companies including the following:
