Invest Program Update
Update from Deborah Pickford, Executive Director of Invest
This fall, Invest has been working with many states to bring more insurance education programming to diverse schools via several exciting projects. In Michigan, we are working with the National Association of African American Insurance Agents, Hanover Insurance, and Liberty Mutual & Invest to launch a pilot program in Detroit to attract underserved students to insurance careers. Goal is to expand this program in D.C., New York & Chicago. We have just started discussions with the Independent Agents of Wisconsin and number partners to expand insurance education into Milwaukee and Madison. IIA of Wisconsin is working with trade association partners to pass financial literacy legislation that would include insurance curriculum. In California, Invest has been partnering with Cal State Fullerton, IIA of California, Travelers, and Latinos for Insurance Networking in the Community (LiNC) to expand insurance education into high schools in Southern California. Currently considering hosting a one-day summer academy on the campus of Cal State to interest young people in insurance and risk management careers. And in Pennsylvania, we recently met with leadership from EducationWorks in Philadelphia – a non-profit organization that provides academic support and career readiness throughout Greater Philadelphia. We are working on a Memorandum of Understanding with EducationWorks to develop an app that would leverage Invest insurance education resources with a focus on careers in the insurance industry.
Learn more about Invest...
Invest provides numerous resources at no cost to teach insurance and career fundamentals in high schools and community colleges across the nation. The program offers textbooks (both hardcopy and eBook), detailed lesson plans, presentations, videos and quizzes that support traditional classroom learning. Topics can include what to look for in a policy, auto insurance issues, operating an insurance agency, and even descriptions of a variety of exciting insurance roles like investigations, fraud, technology and marketing. Along with classroom activities, guest speakers are available for career days at your school. Should a student decide to pursue a career in insurance after they graduate, one of these insurance professionals can mentor their journey. Many Invest grads become eligible for internships and even entry-level positions. Students gain real-life experience to enter insurance, risk management or any other career after graduation. Those who wish to go to college to study insurance-related subjects or obtain their state insurance license can apply for an Invest scholarship to help with their initial education-related expenses.
